"On Margate Sands. I can connect nothing with nothing."

TS Eliot's landmark Modernist poem is a total downer, reflecting how awful life and culture felt after WWI. It uses a fragmented, collage-like structure, blending high art (Grail legends, Shakespeare, Buddha) with sad, mundane scenes of modern London — think failed dates, dead-end jobs, and sterile relationships — to show that Western civilization is spiritually broken and dried up. The central crisis is one of failed communication and sex, and a haunting spiritual thirst. It climaxes with three commands to practice virtues — giving, sympathy, and self-control — ending on a final, ambiguous shout for 'Shantih', a lasting peace that may or may not arrive.

"A hundred years on, anxieties about social change, the sense of a spiritless world, the lament for the loss of tradition, the entrenchment of cynicism and moral numbness, have all become features of political life. The Waste Land still speaks to us..." Kenan Malik (Political commentator and Writer)
